Why the angle matters at all
A newborn has very little control of their head. Sit them too upright and it drops toward the chest. Every rear-facing seat is designed to hold them semi-reclined instead, and the point of the recline setting is exactly that — not comfort, and not how the seat looks in the car.
Forget 45 degrees, find your indicator
Every rear-facing seat has one built in, and different shells hold a baby differently, so each manufacturer sets its own permitted range. Yours is on the side of the seat or the base: a bubble that has to sit between two marks, a line that has to stay level with the ground, or a coloured window. That is your answer, and it beats any number you read online.

The setting you made at birth is not the setting for now
This is the quiet one. Parents get the recline right in the first week and then never touch it again. Rear-facing seats are reclined further back for a newborn and brought more upright as the baby gains head control, within the range the manual allows.
So if the head-flopping started with a toddler rather than a newborn, the likely culprit is a seat still set up for a newborn — or the harness rather than the angle.
When the indicator will not reach the range
Usually that is the car, not the seat. Work through it in this order:
- Park somewhere flat first. A sloped driveway moves the bubble, and people spend an evening chasing a problem that is not there.
- Check the seat is tight enough. Grab it at the belt path and pull: it should not move more than about an inch in any direction. A loose install changes the angle as well as the safety.
- Try a different seating position. Cushions are contoured, and the outer and middle seats in the same car often sit at different angles.
- Then, only what your manual permits. Some manuals allow a firm rolled towel in a specified spot under the base; others forbid anything at all. Follow yours literally — this is precisely where a generic instruction from a stranger does damage, which is why we are not giving you one.
Do not prop the head up
It is the instinctive fix and it is the wrong one. Nothing thick goes behind or underneath your baby unless it came with the seat or the manufacturer says so. If they need steadying, small rolled blankets go beside the shoulders and head, never behind them. Aftermarket head supports and inserts bought separately were never crash-tested with your seat.
If your baby was born early or is very small
Then this stops being a fitting question. Babies born preterm should be checked in hospital to confirm they can sit safely semi-reclined at all, and a baby who needs to lie flat for travel may need a car bed instead of a seat. If you have been told anything about breathing or muscle tone, have that conversation before the first drive rather than guessing at a setting.
The head-slumping that happens outside the car
Most parents first notice it at home — carrier on the hallway floor, baby asleep in it. Out of the car, a carrier sits at a completely different angle than it does clicked into its base, and an infant seat is for travelling in, not for sleeping, feeding or napping indoors. Moving a sleeping baby at 11 p.m. is genuinely awful and it is still the answer.
The two-minute check
- Car on flat ground, seat installed, less than an inch of movement at the belt path.
- Indicator inside its range for your baby’s current size.
- Harness straps flat, untwisted, at or below the shoulders, snug enough that you cannot pinch spare webbing at the shoulder. Chest clip level with the armpits.
- Nothing thick behind or under the baby, no extra inserts.
- Still slumping? A certified child passenger safety technician will spot in two minutes what a photo never shows.
